CRAWLEY HORSHAM VOCATIONAL TRAINING SCHEME
SENIOR HOUSE OFFICER: ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY
The Work of the Department
Crawley Hospital provides a full acute service to the population of Crawley and
Horsham. Major accident services are provided by East Surrey
Hospital at Redhill. The average yearly attendance is 47,000 patients.
The Accident and Emergency Department is a purpose-built building with a
well-equipped resuscitation area. There is an X-ray room within the
Department which deals with all routine Accident and Emergency requirements.
There is a small children's play area and a dedicated children's casualty area.
There is also a designated room for bereaved relatives.
The Department is responsible for primary diagnostic care and emergency
therapeutic care of these patients. Where in-patient or
specialist outpatient treatment is required, the patients are referred to the
relevant duty firms or outpatient clinics. Following this, they pass out of the
care of the Accident and Emergency Consultant, although their initial treatment
may continue to be given in the Accident and Emergency Department. A close
liaison with the appropriate departments, both medical and surgical, will be
required in all emergency cases requiring specialist care.
In the event of an emergency at Gatwick Airport, the Hospital and Department has
a supporting role to East Surrey Hospital.
Within the Department, nurses have extended roles which include suturing,
plastering and other skills. There are also emergency nurse practitioners
who see, diagnose and treat minor injuries.
